A karmic relationship is a connection between two souls who have met in previous lives and choose to meet again. This happens so that they help each other evolve and to complete karmic lessons together. A karmic connection can be with a partner, a parent, a sibling, a boss, a teacher and many more. A karmic relationship is not inherently difficult or toxic or a burden, because we all have free will and can decide what we do with our relationships.
Key takeaways:
- A karmic relationship is not always romantic. Your partners, parents, siblings, children, managers or teachers can all be karmic connections.
- A karmic lesson is like a module in your soul’s learning.
- Karmic relationships are not toxic by nature, not a roller-coaster and not meant to last forever.
- Not every intense or turbulent relationship is karmic. Karma is not a reason to hand your power to fate.
- A past life reading finds the karmic imprint between two people and clears it, and the change that follows is yours to carry forward.

What Is a Karmic Relationship?

A karmic relationship means two people have been in previous lives before and have chosen to meet again. They come back to assist each other, to learn, to evolve and to close karmic lessons together. That is all it means.
Because the online world is dominated by soulmates and twin flames, many people assume a karmic relationship must be romantic. It does not have to be. You can have a karmic relationship with your boss, your manager or your school teacher. These people show up again in your life to play a specific role, one that matters for your development and for what you are here to learn in this life.
As a rule of thumb, the mother and father you chose in this life are karmic connections. We have seen them before and we share a very strong bond with them. The same goes for children and usually siblings too. Our closest family tend to be karmic connections, although in a previous life they may have arrived in a completely different role.
Are Karmic Relationships Meant to Be Together?
No. People have choice, and in a relationship two people have to make the same choice.
A karmic connection tells you that two souls have history and something to learn together. It does not tell you that they must stay together. For any relationship to work, two people have to decide every day to show up, to show love and to show care. Those qualities are not exclusive to karmic relationships. They are what every good relationship is built on.
The Same Soul Can Return in a Different Role
Karmic connections tend to come back, usually in a different role. Your brother-in-arms in a previous life might be your friend or neighbour in this one. On a soul level these roles mean very little. A soul is eager to explore and learn every feeling, every quality and every virtue, so it does not matter which label it wears each time.
Another thing to note is that most of us also play several roles in someone’s life at once. A teacher may also be a mother/father figure. A neighbour may also be a friend or a saviour from a disaster.
What Is a Karmic Lesson?
A karmic lesson means the soul needs to learn one specific thing, and it orchestrates life situations to learn through them. I want to be careful here. We cannot leave everything to spirit and to karma. We also need to factor in reality and the present. Your personality and your desires shape how a karmic lesson unfolds, how it plays out, how it closes and integrates.
In the School of Life, a Karmic Lesson Is One Module

Think of life as a school (it is). You come here to learn, and there is a series of modules to get through, all pretty much predetermined before you incarnate. A karmic lesson is one of those modules.
The people around you are part of the curriculum. To attract the most compatible and the easiest karmic connections, you need to raise your frequency. You do that by working through the patterns and energy blocks in your life. The more you clear, the higher the quality of connection you can hold.
How Do You Know Your Karmic Lesson?
This is one of the questions I am asked a lot, and there are many theories. For some people it is a yearning they have felt since they were young. For others it is revealed gradually as they progress through life, learn things and see things. Sometimes you only realise a karmic lesson after you have completed it. Sometimes you are completely unaware that you went through a life lesson until is complete and integrated.
An Example Karmic Lesson: Through Injury
A client of mine went through a serious injury that was truly debilitating for a long time. Only after she came through it she understood its meaning.
through her life, she had been conditioned to learn the hard way and that learning has to be painful. She also hadn’t developed enough self-love and self-worth which would help to question it and reject it. Working together she came to understand that her injury came from that pattern. Because of that tough karmic lesson, she finally understood the importance of self-love and self-worth.
I also helped her learn that learning can be soft, effortless and fun without hurting. Once she saw that, she no longer needed pain to be her teacher. She now knows she can choose to learn effortlessly in the highest and best way for her.
Karmic Patterns and Why Some Karmic Connections Keep Repeating
When a lesson has not been integrated, the same karmic patterns can keep finding their way back into your life. Different faces, similar story. If you have ever wondered why you keep attracting the same kind of person, this article on relationship dynamics goes deeper.

Here are the patterns I see most in past life readings:
Unresolved Karmic Loops and Emotional Charge
This is the pattern I target most in my past life readings. Emotional charge from a previous life stays in the field between two people and attracts the same karmic patterns again and again. It is common for two people to carry unresolved emotional charge between them. Until that charge is cleared, the loop keeps running.
Shared Karmic Lesson and Contracts
Sometimes one or both people have not integrated the core lesson. It might be anything like power, forgiveness, boundaries or self-worth. Energetic dependency is closely related. Karmic cords or contracts can keep two people locked in familiar pain rather than growth.
Karmic Relationship Imprints I See Often in Readings
Each reading is unique. In each one we find several karmic connections and we clear several imprints from each connection, so there is great variety. I do not claim that any imprint shows up in most people. Across many readings, though, some come up often:
- Self-sacrifice. Someone gives so much to be a good companion that it becomes a detriment to them. It can show up in this life as people-pleasing or a lack of boundaries.
- Excess love. A love that burns like a blazing fire instead of a warming one, and ends up consuming the person giving it.
- Abandonment. Either abandoning the other person or attracting abandonment from others.
- Refusal to forgive. A reluctance to let go of what happened, leading to the continuation of the karmic cycle.
Karmic Relationship Myths and Misconceptions
Much of what I read online about karmic relationships is wrong. A lot of it is written to provoke an emotional response rather than to help you. Here are the most common misconceptions I see:
- “
A karmic relationship is a roller-coaster of emotions.” It is not. - “Y
ou feel an instant connection or revulsion.” This can be true for some people, but I would not say it applies to everyone. - “
You have constant déjà vu.” No. - “
You always feel you have to fix things.” Most definitely no. That is inaccurate and only feeds anxiety. - “
Your boundaries are being pushed.” No. - “
It feels unstable.” No. - “
It feels passionate and intense.” It can be in some romantic relationships but not necessarily and not for every type of relationship. - “
Frequent breakups and getting back together are part of it.” No. - “
A karmic relationship is toxic.” Absolutely not.
A karmic relationship simply means two souls have met before and have come back to help each other evolve.
How Long Do Karmic Relationships Last?
There is no set duration, and I push back firmly on anyone who gives one. It is immature to offer a blanket answer to a question like this. Free will is always at play, and in a relationship there is also the free will of another person. Nor are karmic relationships meant to last forever. Some are with us for a lifetime, others for a certain period, and both are complete.
Not Every Turbulent Relationship Is Karmic
Not every intense, passionate relationship is karmic. We have free will, and I do not think we can pin such a label on every turbulent relationship. To me, that is a lazy way of outsourcing responsibility and handing it to karma.
The opposite is equally true. Calling a breakup justified because the relationship “wasn’t karmic” is just as much a lack of personal responsibility. In any relationship, two people need to make a conscious choice to show up.
How to Complete a Karmic Lesson and Release a Karmic Bond
Many of my clients ask how to break a karmic bond or how to cut karmic ties with someone. There are plenty of rituals for cutting cords and plenty of guided meditations, and I offer some of them from time to time. The fastest way I know to release a karmic bond, is to complete, learn and integrate the karmic lesson you share with that person.
Completing a Karmic Lesson With Love and Forgiveness

The key is purity of intention, love and forgiveness. When we identify too strongly with the ego, it is easy to get caught in the drama. Who is right? Who is wrong? Whose fault is it? Who needs to be blamed? Who needs something back? That is what keeps two people in a karmic loop, hurting each other over and over.
My personal advice is to cleanse the energy between you, and then close the lesson in the most loving way you can. The cleansing can happen through a past life reading, consciously by yourself or even through therapy. If you want a practical guide to closing a lesson, how to integrate past life lessons covers it in detail.
What Changes After Cleansing a Karmic Connection
Cleansing a karmic connection means clearing the emotional residue and the karmic imprint that sits between two people. Once a karmic lesson is closed and integrated, your frequency changes. That change tends to go one of two ways.
If the other person’s frequency is now incompatible with yours, the relationship will likely fade. The incompatibility becomes apparent and, most of the time, there is no longer any point in staying. If your frequencies remain similar, either you have further lessons to close together or the relationship rises to a higher level, on much better terms for both of you. In these instances, clients often find their bonds strengthen and their relationships become more fulfilling.
Either way, you are freer.
What a Past Life Reading Reveals About a Karmic Relationship
When I perform a past life reading, I connect with the Creator and then to the Akashic Records in a methodical, systematic way. The imprint arrives clearly and sometimes I also get insight into how their story was shaped in that life, but I focus on the imprint. When we cleanse the imprint, the rest falls away.
The reading also shows how each connection may appear in your life now. I tell clients the biggest role each person is likely to play, and I remind them that most people play several.
Past Life Reading: What You Receive

I perform a past life methodically and include many details to paint a true picture of your previous life. I find where you were born, your sex, the environment you were raised in and the karmic lessons you did not complete. From there I look at your relationship with yourself, how you approached other people, the blockages you face, the karmic connections that need cleansing, the karmic residue between them and any soul traumas you carry. I also look at the limiting behaviours and emotions coming from that life, and the positive ones you need to develop. I collate everything in a PDF and send it to you with the affirmations that cleanse these imprints.
You can see an example of what a past life reading reveals, or read about the full past life reading service.
If you prefer not to read the affirmations over a set period and want results immediately, I can cleanse the imprints for you remotely. I connect with the Creator and ask for the imprints to be cleansed. I am simply the witness of the cleansing, and the translator between you and the Creator. Clients tell me they feel a gentle lightness, a sense that something has lifted, although they often cannot say exactly what.
Karmic Relationship FAQ
Do karmic relationships come back?
Yes, they tend to and usually they return in a different role. A comrade in a previous life might be your friend or partner in this one.
Do people marry their karmic partner?
Potentially. We have free will, so maybe and maybe not. Some people choose not to marry and still have strong karmic connections. Some divorce their karmic partner because they are simply no longer compatible.
How do I know if I have a karmic connection with someone?
As a rule of thumb, your parents, siblings and children are karmic connections. In romantic relationships, not every intense relationship is a karmic one. A past life reading can show you which connections you carry and the role each plays.
How do I break karmic ties with someone?
The fastest way is to complete, learn and integrate the karmic lesson you share, with love and forgiveness. It really helps to cleanse the karmic residue between you through a past life reading, but can also be done by conscious work or therapy.
Is a karmic lesson the same as karmic debt?
Karmic debt suggests something is owed to someone from a past life. A karmic lesson is what your soul is yearning to learn and it can close through understanding and forgiveness,
If you would like to see the karmic connections and imprints in your own life, you can book a past life reading.
